Polonnaruwa was the second classical capital of Sri Lanka (after Anuradhapura) and reached its zenith under King Parakramabahu in the 12th century. Today, the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Park showcases an extraordinary collection of preserved ruins, temples, and sculptures.
Among the highlights are the Gal Vihara rock-carved Buddha statues, impressive palace remains, stupas, monastic ruins, and elaborately carved stone features. The layout is compact enough to explore by bicycle, allowing visitors to traverse the grounds and feel intimately connected with centuries-old craftsmanship and devotion.
Polonnaruwa lies within Sri Lanka’s “Cultural Triangle,” making it convenient to pair with Anuradhapura and Sigiriya. Its calm reflections, verdant surroundings, and sense of continuity between past and present make it a deeply rewarding stop.
